AO- SAN PETHEO

SAN PETHEO (SAHN- PUH-THAY-O)

San Petheo is a small, Southerly Central-American nation bordering on the Pacific, the Carribean and several Central and South American regions. It has 3 provinces, most notably Granja Province which has been the heart of an uprising since 2018.

For centuries during the Conquistadora , runaway servants, colonials, and slaves fled the early colony of San Petheo to live among the indigenous people. Loyal Colonials denigrated these “traitors” as “Maorno,” and granted them second class status… which in turn the “Maorno” adopted as their own mark of pride.

Over time, the colony of San Petheo grew richer but the spoils were divided unevenly between The San Petheons- who made a grand culture of the Old World mixed with the New- and the Maorno, who settled wherever they could and built a parallel life when not actively hunted for sport.

Much of San Petheo’s progress was built on the backs of these people, as new resources were discovered, mercenaries and government troops would root them out of their homes and seize their land. This fed a nearly generational rebellion for the last 300 years.

15 years ago, the San Petheo government accepted the Maorno with open arms and recognized their humanity with full citizenship and legal rights.

However, there were unintended consequences.

Maorno now had legal rights and property, and their wealth from black markets was validated even as these black markets went straight or dried up.

Many still held onto an attitude of hostility towards the government that welcomed them, others, accustomed to providing for themselves with criminal enterprise could no longer support themselves with legitimate work. San Petheon businesses were slow to hire their newfound countrymen. Due to a racial blindness stemming back several hundred years, Maorno towns and markets and even population were simply not recognized, and “overnight” new towns, roads, structures, and a massive population had to be “integrated” into the San Petheo economy and legal system. Progress was made, but it was slow and people on both sides are caught between generations of conflict and a new bright future that is not happening fast enough for all.

One peacemaker of note was Elias SanSibarro, a Maorno politician that built bridges as the wheels of society caught up to the rapidly changing world.

SanSibarro was slated to win the 2017 election for Granja province’s Governor, until he lost his life in an exchange with Federale soldiers at a checkpoint.

In 2018, the Maorno Rebellion “Los Vibores” pushed the Federales “Los Griffones” nearly out of Granja and assassinated the Griffones Allied Provincial Governor and spymaster. In 2020, the Griffones dealt a significant blow to the Rebellions, but managed in the process to destroy a priceless cultural artifact that set back all political progress. In 2021 and the years since, the forces have been battling each other with devastating results while simultaneously excavating Ancient ruins for valuables to sustain their fight as well as persuade the populace that they are the true guardians of San Petheo’s shared culture.
